O is for Odie

The week's Heads or Tails is HEADS - Anything starting with the letter O

If you would like to play, go here

<><><><><><><><><><>

O is for Odie. Odie was my Yorkshire Terrier that I had for 14 years. We had a break-in one night, so I immediately bought this little watch dog. He was a real terror with anyone outside. Once someone came into the house he treated people kindly. One evening a neighbor called the police saying there was a ferocious dog in the neighborhood and gave my address. Odie was never outside without being on his lease. When the cop arrived he sat in his car for awhile looking around for this beast that had been described to him. When he thought it was safe for him to get out of the car, he came up to my door and rang the bell. When I answered he asked if I was Linda and did I have a dog. I said yes. He asked where he was at this time. I opened the door a little further and he could see Odie sitting there looking at him. The officer said no, I mean the ferocious one. I told the officer Odie was my only dog.

The officer stepped inside and closed the door because it was cold outside. Odie came running to meet him and found Odie was very gentle. We began talking and I learned he knew my Daddy and lived closed to where Daddy grew up. After talking for about a half hour the officer said he would write this up as a prank call and would tell the other officers to ignore any further calls that may come in about Odie.

I had some weird neighbors where I use to live. People just loved calling the police every time someone would sneeze. How could anyone think this sweet little dog was ferocious! Odie lived for 14 years and is now resting peacefully in the family cemetery.

This week's prompt is HEADS - Flower
Go here to participate

At first glance this may not look like flowers, but if you look closely you will see the first flower that has appeared on my tomato plants.

What a miracle that will occur when this little flower turns into big juicy tomatoes.

Heads orTails

This week's theme/prompt is: Tails
We are to tell about a job we have had.

I gave 23 years of my life to state government. I worked for the Bureau for Public Health and was the director of the Division of Recruitment. We were charged with the recruitment and retention of physicians, mid-levels and nurses for our rural areas. In addition to recruitment and retention we administered three different loan repayment programs. The health professional would receive medical educational loan repayment in return for a two year obligation in a rural area. Do you remember the TV show "Northern Exposure"? This was the concept for these programs. We were also responsible for determining what areas of the state were classified as Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) and Medically Underserved Areas (MUA). This was done by gathering data and following federal guidelines. Areas were updated annually. We also administered the J-1 Visa Waiver Program. This program afforded foreign medical graduates the opportunity to stay in this country and work provided they work in an underserved area. WOW, I can't believe I remembered that much detail!!!

The best part of my job was the people. I knew every hospital administrator and primary care clinic administrator in the state, worked closely with our three medical schools, had close working relationship with the federal offices in Philadelphia and Washington, DC. I also belonged to a national organization where I worked with my counterpart in all 50 states. These are the people I miss. I have only stayed in touch with a few. My biggest challenge with my job was trying to accomplish the goals of the program under the restraints of state government.

This week's theme/prompt is: HEADS - Any Tom, Dick Or Harry

For more HoT participants go here.

This week's theme gives me the opportunity to feature my favorite Harry, "Dirty Harry". I fell in love with this character back in the 70's and still love to watch the reruns.

Since I'm writing this post in haste, I thought I would provide famous quotes from the Dirty Harry series which includes Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool. Clint Eastwood stars as Inspector Harry Callahan in each movie.

Sudden Impact
Go ahead, make my day.

Listen, punk. To me you're nothin' but dogshit, you understand? And a lot of things can happen to dogshit. It can be scraped up with a shovel off the ground. It can dry up and blow away in the wind. Or it can be stepped on and squashed. So take my advice and be careful where the dog shits ya!

God this stuff isn't getting to me - the shootings, the knifings, the beatings. Old ladies being bashed in the head for their social security checks. Nah that doesn't bother me. But you know what does bother me? You know what makes me really sick to my stomach? It's watching you stuff your face with those hotdogs! Nobody - I mean nobody puts ketchup on a hot dog!

Dirty Harry
I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?

Magnum Force -
Harry Callahan - You heroes killed a dozen people this week. What are you going to do next week?
Officer Davis - Kill a dozen more.

The Dead Pool
Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one.

The Enforcer
I wasn't able to think of or find a famous quote for this movie. If you know of one, leave it in the comments.

I've got lots to do today, so I'll be around to visit tonight. Everyone, have a great day.

This week theme/prompt is HEADS - Mother

For more HOT participants or to play along go here.

I’m sure the intent of this week’s theme is to celebrate our Mother since Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday. I'm going to wait until Sunday to do a post about my Mother and/or mother's in general. Today I'm going to share how Mother's Day started.

Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words to the “Battle Hymn of Republic” first suggested this concept in 1872. It wasn’t until 1907 when Anna Jarvis held a ceremony in Grafton, West Virginia to honor her mother who died two years earlier. Anna Jarvis began a campaign to create a national holiday honoring mothers. In 1910 West Virginia became the first state to recognize the new holiday and the nation followed in 1914 when President Wilson declared the second Sunday in May to be Mother’s Day. Anna Jarvis was never married and was never a Mother herself.

Doing research for the dates for this post I also read Shelly Moore Capito, a US Senator for West Virginia, proposed a Mother's Day coin. It is to be minted in 2014. Shelly is the daughter of one of our former Governors, Arch Moore.

This week's Heads or Tails theme is HEADS - Direction

The word direction reminds me of one of the most famous signs showing the direction to the hometowns of the staff of the
M*A*S*H (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit in the television show set in Korea during the 1950's.

After the last filming of M*A*S*H, the signpost was donated to the Smithsonian by 20th Century Fox and was on display with other M*A*S*H props and memorabilia. Currently, the signpost is part of the National Museum of American History.

HEADS - Tip *OR* TAILS - Anything that rhymes with Tip

Each week I look forward to participating in the Heads or Tails meme. This week I am just brain dead on this subject.

I first thought of a post on hubby's
tipping practices. We have had many discussions about the amount he tips. The lowest tip he has ever given is 20% and that is for bad service. And, he tips everyone for everything. I'm surprised he doesn't give the Walmart greater a tip for saying "Welcome to Walmart".

I also thought of
cow tipping. Now that would be a funny story had I ever participated in this activity. So, I dismissed that idea.

Then I became thinking of useful
tips. I even narrowed that topic down to the many uses of a Q-tip. BTW, I can't clean my car with Q-tips. They are wonderful cleaning the air vents. How interesting would that be?

Of course I thought of how I could also prepare a post with a word that rhymes with tip and I was unable to come up with anything clever or worth reading. So here I sit mulling over all the possibilities and I finally said to myself, "Linda, get a
GRIP, you don't have to participate each week".

So that is why I'm not going to link this week. If by chance you stop by here, just realize I'm having a brain dead experience. Hopefully, I'll be back next week.

This week's theme/prompt is: HEADS - Express. Since it's HEADS I don't have to use the exact word or I use ANY form of it. For more players go here .

Since today is Carson 7th birthday, I want to express to him a great big
Happy Birthday!!!!

I couldn't find one recent picture of Carson by himself. Now that he has 1 brother and 2 sisters, it hard to get a picture of just him. This picture was taken right after Caramia came home.

Here he's being Mr. Cool with his brother Campbell.

Carson is celebrating his 7th birthday. For those of you who don't know, Carson fell from the top of a slide at school the first of February and had a concussion and fractured skull. It will take a year for the fracture to heal completely. He is doing really well but continues to be very cautious.

And a couple more pictures of Caramia showing some fun expressions.

March 18: HEADS - Any part of (or place in) a house

I, like many other people, would love, love, love to have a kitchen like the one from the movie "Somethings Got to Give". Months after I saw that movie I began seeing where people were designing their own kitchen after this one. To me it's the perfect kitchen, comfortable, warm, welcoming, open and light-filled. And I especially loved the big island with a bookcase which would give plenty of room for prepping meals. This is the one room of a house where people gather.

The kitchen has white glass-front cabinets, vintage hardware, a commercial-style range and dark soapstone counter tops. For those of you who don't know, I'm house hunting and a roomy kitchen with a large island is a requirement.

This week is Tails. We are to list 7 things that we like. I'm a big TV buff so I'm going to list 7 of my favorite TV shows. To visit more Heads or Tails participants go here .

1. Lost - I'm a big Lost fan and must admit that I have been playing the Lost game, Flight 815. I think this is a show that you love or hate. I got hooked the first season and have been a faithful follower each year. It's about a group of people who crashed on a desert island, encountered the "Others" and are trying to leave the island. There is so much story it is impossible to list them all.

2. Boston Legal - Denny Crane. Just hearing William Shatner saying that line cracks me up. It is the story of a group brilliant but often emotionally challenged attorneys who confronts social and moral issues each week while its characters continually stretch of boundaries of the law.

3. Medium - I'm fascinated with the idea of predictions, or in this case, Allyson dreaming of what has happened or what will happen.

4. Dancing With the Stars - I don't like reality show, but this one I love. Perhaps because I love to dance and I fantasize about me doing some of those elaborate moves.

5. Monk - Adrian Monk is an obsessive-compulsive consultant to the police department and has a gift for crime scene analysis and legendary powers of observation that has earned his a reputation as one of the best detectives in San Francisco.

6. Two and a Half Men - Jake, the son of Alan makes this show. The story is about two brothers Alan and Charlie and Alan's son Jake. Charlie is a professional bachelor with a string of sexy women and all he does is get laid. Alan is recently divorced and he and Jake have moved in with Charlie. This show is just fun.

7. Dirty Sexy Money - Donald Sutherland (whom I adore) plays the powerful and persuasive Tripp Darling. The story is about his strange family and Nick, whose father use to work for Tripp and was killed in an airplane crash. Nick is now working for the Darlings and tyring to learn who killed his father. There are colorful character like the oldest son Patrick who is married, is the attorney general for New York and has a transgendered girlfriend. Karen the eldest daughter and a loser with love turns to Nick to solve her problems. Brian is a priest, is married and has an illegitimate son by another woman.. Then there are the twins who are in constant trouble.

Heads or Tails

This week's Heads or Tails theme is HEADS - Wonder *or* TAILS - Wander. To visit more HEADS or TAILS participants visit Barb @ Skittles' Place .

Last week I read the week's topic wrong and wrote this post instead. I found a You Tube video of the Monotones singing "Who Wrote the Book of Love" and placed it here for you to enjoy. When I published this post today I checked the video and wouldn't you know it's no longer available. I was unable to find another video but I didn't find the song for my playlist. You may need to turn your speakers up.

Now on to what I wrote last week.

As I sat down to think about this week's theme, I kept thinking, "Wonder, wonder, wonder. Then it all came to me. I wonder, wonder, wonder, who, oou who wrote the book of love. Therefore, for your listening pleasure is The Monotones hit "Who Wrote the Book of Love".
